Chapter Forty One

 

In the United Arab Emirates, Emirati business culture had negotiations progressing at a much slower pace than normal. So it was not unusual to find meetings lengthy and drawn out. It did however require a good doze of patience and flexibility to keep an open mind for valuable time was indeed essential for an Emirati to feel confident in doing business with you. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Hussain Al Khalifa was an eighty year old man who was rather traditional in his ways but had a flamboyant streak in him. He was a shrewd business leader who silently observed and voiced his opinion at the end of all discussions. He also ruled over a desert tribe in a long line of distinguished heritage and in the city he was the head of his family business worth billions which was largely made up from oil production. So what was it that the Indian billionaire wanted?

The answer to that was pretty straightforward it centered on aluminium trade.  India and the United Arab Emirates were amongst the top ten producing countries of aluminium worldwide Ram Kapoor owned the biggest aluminium factory in India and he wanted his hands on some of the UAE production that was his reasoning for being here away from his darling wife and so our story continues with the billionaire husband asleep in the presidential suite of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai and In Mumbai at Kapoor Mansion was the very upset but deeply loved pregnant wife of the one and only Mr Ram Kapoor. 

This morning the birds chirped its way in a flurry of activity while sunlight streamed into the master bedroom penetrating through the expensive layers of the curtaining and heralding it self that a new day was here, bright and beautiful.   Priya was sleeping facing the window with the shadows of the bright yellow rays of the sun dazzling on her face waking her up from her dreamless state to the sounds of a lion’s snore.  She tried to edge closer to him feeling the warmth of his big body but all she could feel was the coldness of an empty space.  Squinting open her one eye the light struck at her cornea, blinking, she turned over to face her lion and sadly she sighed. She sat up in bed pulling her hair away from her face and then she realized she was hearing the snoring through her phone. 

With flashbacks from the early hours of the morning she remembered they both fell off to sleep with the phone stuck to their ear but before she could get all mushy she also remembered Ram was not here to go with her to her doctor’s appointment and that made her mad at him all over again. Right this moment he was asleep somewhere in Dubai snoring his heart out while she was so not ready to forgive him.  Putting the phone on loud speaker she took it with her into the bathroom leaving it on the vanity counter while she went through her routine to brush her teeth and shower.  She tried to be overly noisy to disturb him but her lion was so content asleep deaf to all the noises.  At one point his snore softened to breathing and then to complete silence but a few minutes later the deep throated roar of his snore was back in full force, smiling to herself she knew no matter how angry she was with him she could never live without hearing the sounds of his snoring.  At the beginning of their marriage she suffered from serious lack of sleep because of the disturbance from his snoring but now it was so part of her that she needed to hear it in order for her to feel his presence making her safe and secured in her sleep.

Rubbing her tummy and having a heart to heart with her baby she said, baby that big lion is being mean to mama.  Ram woke up yawning and stretching his arms hearing his wife talking to his baby, amused he asked her so when did I become a lion and she said when you decided that your wife and baby are not important enough. Come on Priya how much longer are you going to keep this up? For ever she shouted at him you deserve forever. Ouch do you need to shout so early in the morning you hurting my ear, good she said you deserve it.  I promise baby I’ll make this up to you how many times do I have to say sorry? I don’t care about your promises and how sorry you are, out of the blue she said to him anyway I’ve decided  that I’m going to stay at my parents house. Confused he asked her but what is the need for that when I will be home tonight.  You didn’t let me complete I said I’m going to stay at my parents house and I’ll be there for the rest of the week so whether you come home or not it doesn’t really bother me.

What, he shouted you can’t do that. Just watch me she said I most certainly can. Well get one thing clear I won’t allow it Priya.  I don’t care about what you will allow or not since you lost that right yesterday when you decided to fly off to Dubai without informing me first. For god sake Priya it was a business decision. Yes she shouted business, business that’s all you think about so you might as well just stay there since your business needs you more.  Priya I swear half the time you talk utter nonsense. Yes she screamed then don’t talk to me because I certainly am not talking to you. He shouted back who said you talking when all you’ve been doing is shouting at me and bad mouthing me to my baby. Oh I’m shouting she said so why bother speaking to me anyway my baby needs to know the truth about you that your business is more important than us. That is not fair Priya you know how important you are too me, she said funny you should say that when you in Dubai right now missing our doctor’s appointment. Jesus Christ can you stop being so dramatic.  She said need I remind you that I’m not talking to you.  Madam you called me I didn’t call you.  Oh I called you that’s right then I’m so sorry you were so greatly in-convenienced I will rectify that right now. He knew what was coming no he shouted, no Priya don’t you dare hang up that phone you know I hate it when you do that.  To defy him she cut the call and switched of her phone wanting to prove a point, now Mr Kapoor enjoy talking to yourself she gloated, it serves you right for leaving me alone and missing our doctor’s appointment.

Damn it to hell, giving up he threw his phone on the bed frustrated beyond words, god do you actually have fun out there seeing this Hitler crucify me.  Just when he thought he could pacify her this morning and get to some normalcy she goes into her hell cat mode once again. Clearly he was going to be in the dog box for a long time, how was he suppose to get himself out of this mess and to top it all she was threatening him with staying at her parents house for god sake how the hell did he stop her when he was here in Dubai. Why Priya? Why do you give me such a hard time? Why can’t you just be like a normal wife and understand the situation? it’s not like I’m happy being here anyway.

The walls of the presidential suite seemed to be sniggering at each for a certain Mrs Kapoor was giving their guest a bashing ohhhhhhhhhhh they all craned their ears like little old woman to hear more of the hot gossip.  While at Kapoor Mansion Priya was looking at his photo speaking to him most seriously, you make me so mad that I end up saying things I don’t even mean all she wanted to do was to prove a point that he couldn’t fly off where ever he wanted too and whenever he felt like in fact he broke his own golden rule for them to never stay apart from each other not even for a night well Mr Kapoor lets see what happens when you take me for granted, I can be just as difficult as you are with me.

Later that afternoon, Mumbai was experiencing a heat wave it was so unbearable that all you wanted to do was to be inside the coolness of the air conditioning. Priya walked into Dr Anuradha Mehta’s rooms feeling very sorry for herself she missed not having her annoying husband accompany her and it irritated her that he was not by her side, upsetting her even more was the fact that he didn’t even call her back after this morning.  Ok she knew she switched off her phone but still if he really cared enough he could have tried calling her on the house phone but clearly his business was more important than she and their baby. For that reason she sat at the back of the car being chauffeured driven to her appointment feeling rather alone and emotional.  When she walked into the coolness of the reception area of the doctor’s offices her mood seemed to be even duller. She sat quietly on the cushioned coach secretly eyeing the other pregnant women who were there with their husbands.  With her hands on her tummy she spoke silently, baby it’s just you and me today, I’m so sorry my angel but mama loves you so much.  Mrs Kapoor, being deep in thought she didn’t hear her name being called out Mrs Kapoor the smiling nurse said again, the doctor is ready for you.

On seeing the genuine smile on the welcoming doctor, she broke down into tears sobbing her heart out telling the doctor that Ram could not make the appointment because he was in Dubai.  Mrs Kapoor there, there now, it’s going to be ok my dear. She gently took her to sit down please don’t upset yourself it’s really ok that Mr Kapoor could not make this appointment and there’s always the next appointment. I’m sure he must off really wanted to be here but off course sometimes things just happen.  You very kind doctor, sniffling she said well I don’t accept that he promised me he’d be with me through all of this, after all it is his baby too, isn’t that so doctor she asked seeking assurance that she was right in her thoughts while she blew her nose gently on a tissue.  

I understand how you must be feeling Mrs Kapoor but you also need to start worrying about yourself and that of your baby you know your baby is experiencing  all the same emotions that you do so when you happy or sad it will know how you feeling and it will react to your emotions. Are you serious doctor, yes Mrs Kapoor I’m serious at this stage of your pregnancy and from now on, well if not already your baby is being sensitive to your emotions.  Priya was stunned I didn’t’ realize that, I’m sure you didn’t but now that you do you just need to pay careful attention. She smiled at Priya and asked so are you ready to see your baby?  Priya smiled back wiping her tears and said yes I am doctor I’m ready for my baby.  Ok let’s get you to the examining room for your ultrasound you go through and change into the gown laid out for you on the bed and I will be with you shortly. Thank you doctor she woke up from her seat and walked into the doctor’s examining room.

Outside the reception area there was a whole lot of commotion with a harassed looking receptionist and nurse on duty, the in-house phone on the doctor’s desk rang.  She answered, yes Sunitha what is it.  Doctor there’s a Mr Kapoor here and he’s demanding to come in. Oh that’s just wonderful news Sunitha please send him in.  Ok Doctor I will do that right now, putting the phone down Sunitha said Mr Kapoor you can go through. If only you listened to me in the first place I could have been in there a long time ago.  I’m sorry sir she stammered Ram didn’t even bother to respond he walked towards the doctor’s rooms.  The doctor greeted him with a brilliant smile Mr Kapoor it is such a pleasure to see you again, with all the drama of getting here and being harassed by the staff outside he was not impressed and asked the doctor, is my wife in here.  Yes she is, she’s in my examining room right now. He looked crest fallen did I miss much he asked because if I did it would be all thanks to your staff out there.

No not at all Mr Kapoor I’m really sorry for that but I’m so happy that you managed to get here in time Mrs Kapoor was a bit emotional when she arrived.  Ram looked concerned the doctor could see his reaction. Don’t worry Mr Kapoor she’ll be fine now that you here so please go through I’ll give you a few minutes alone.  Thank you doctor he turned and walk towards the examining room. Priya was standing next to the bed wearing a lacy purple bra and matching panty, her back was facing him in a slowed motion she picked up the blue cotton gown folded neatly on the bed.

 He watched her carefully for a few seconds, calming his rushed nerves he took a deep breath and walked forward. He gently wrapped his arms around her, his hands clasped on her stomach while he kissed the side of her neck.  Feeling his touch and his presence she inhaled his scent. A lone single teardrop slipped from her watery eye falling onto his hand while he felt the wetness touch his skin. How’s my babies he whispered into her ear?  In an over whelmed emotion she turned around into his arms crashing on his chest, oh Ram she sobbed wrapping her arms tight around his neck while he pulled her close into him.  Shuuuuuuuuh he said softly don’t cry baby I’m here now, she hiccupped and sniffled her nose. He pulled away slightly from her, with so much love in his eyes he wiped away her tears and she with so much love in her dampened eyes smiled, he was here with her that's all that mattered.  He kissed her lips holding the sides of her face I missed you so much. so baby are you going to talk to me now she crashed into his arms again

How could you leave me alone, burying her head on his chest, how could you, you didn’t even call me back, she pouted her lips sulking with the fist of her hand she gently hit at his chest. He grabbed her hand to stop her from hitting him with a devilish smile he said i swear you are a real hell cat but the point is I’m here now and if you remember correctly you switched your phone off.  Well you could off called the house phone she went on but then she stopped, how did you know my phone was switched off? Stupid question when you know how you have me running around in circles for you.

Really, she asked  most happy that she got her own way. Yes really he said, you are just too much Priya and to threaten me with staying at your parent’s house that’s just not on.  She smiled naughtily and said are you complaining, he sighed and said no I’m not complaining.  She looked into his eyes and asked how did you get here in time? Well for you baby it seems I’d do just about anything, I even told that silly old sheikh to take the deal and shove it because my babies were more important.  Really she looked up at him most impressed, did you really say that? I did he said most proudly and kissed her soundly. So madam if you done with your questioning for now, let’s get you into this gown before the doctor walks in on us.  While he slipped the gown on her he said but I have to say you look really sexy right now standing there in your underwear she smiled and said I’m glad you think so.  He laughed I don’t think so, I know so and his eyes held hers into a loving glare. 

There was a soft cough at the doorway they both turned to see the doctor, can I come in she asked? Priya said most shyly off course doctor while Ram helped Priya onto the bed he then went to take a seat next to her in the corner holding her one hand in his.  The doctor said so Mrs Kapoor glad to see you smiling again  she laughed while Priya blushed and Ram tightened his hold on her hand.  The doctor came to her lifting her gown to expose her swollen stomach I’m going to put some gel on your stomach, the procedure is going to be exactly the same as the last time so I want you both to look at the screen. Are you ready for this? yes they both said at the same time eager to see their baby, and just like that the blank screen flashed with an image of Priya's uterus  the doctor pointed see there, that’s your baby moving the control stick around her stomach the doctor showed them its tiny little heart they both looked with open wonder as their eyes adjusted to their baby on the screen but this time the baby could be seen clearly. Well Mrs Kapoor I’m glad your baby is growing really nicely its heart beat is healthy so all in all I’m happy to say that everything is like it should be so a happy fifth month to you.

Both Ram and Priya were so happy to hear this news he squeezed her hand in reassurance, so tell me do you both want to know the sex of your baby?  They both looked at each confused Priya said I’m not sure doctor all we want is a healthy baby, Ram said well off course I want to know but that’s my wife’s decision.  Priya looked at him asking are you sure you would be ok if we didn’t find out?He said to her whatever you want baby off course I’d be happy with anything you decide but I would love to have a little girl just like you. Priya looked at him with amazement the doctor smiled at their thinking and said to the both of them you know I’m rather surprised that you don’t want to know the sex of your baby but I’m happy and respect your decision, I just wish more people thought like you.  Ram said, I guess when people start realizing it’s not the sex of the baby that matters but having a healthy baby that’s more important anyway I want lots of girls so we can start our own hockey team. Priya looked shocked Mr Kapoor can we get through the first one before you start planning your hockey team they both burst out laughing while the doctor looked on amused.

After the ultrasound scan was over they went back into the doctor’s office sitting across her desk, so do you have any concerns or questions that you would like to ask.  Ram said doctor I wanted to know if it’s normal that Priya is always so tired.  The doctor laughed off course it’s all part of what woman go through when pregnant. So Mrs Kapoor if you tired you just rest as much as you can.  Priya smiled looking at Ram and said see that means I can sleep as much as I want. Ram cleared his throat doctor I have another question can we continue having sex? Priya blushed at the back of her mind she knew he was leading up to this question. The doctor said off course Mr Kapoor your sex life shouldn’t stop but doctor are you sure? off course I’m sure, she said.  

Like an eager school boy he sat forward smiling so you mean to tell me there’s no problem with us having sex that the baby will be ok.  Yes that’s exactly what I’m saying in fact couples can carry on with their sex life right till the end of the pregnancy but each situation is different but from what I can see there’s nothing to stop you both from carrying on as normal.  Ram was overly excited and couldn’t believe what he was hearing, He felt Priya’s heel of her shoe dig into his foot quickly moving his foot away he glared at her while she mouthed to him will you just stop. He glared back ignoring her he turned to the doctor not ready to be put off by his wife he said so we can have sex till the end, doctor really I have to compliment you, you really are a very good doctor.  The doctor laughed well thank you Mr Kapoor I’m glad you think so, he grinned while Priya just smiled embarrassed and ready to kill him later.

The doctor said well then I will see you both in a month’s time now just remember if there’s anything that you need at anytime of the day or night just call me, you have my after hour’s number too.  Thank you doctor they both said and woke up from their seats to leave.  When they left the doctor’s office and walked out the reception area there was a much relieved looking Sunitha as she saw a broad smile on Mr Kapoor’s face when he walked out holding his wife’s hand thank god for that she breathed a sigh of relief.  While on the outside Ram squealed in delight did you hear that baby, did you hear what the doctor said, shuuussh she said will you stop making a scene people are looking. He laughed and said right now I don’t care what people think.  Holding her waist he said so Mrs Kapoor how would you like to spend the rest of your afternoon, well since you asked she said I’m so tired I didn’t have a good night sleep because someone chose not to be around.  He laughed and said well baby that someone is ready to make amends to you right now but to be honest I’m also exhausted so how about we go to our apartment for an afternoon nap that way we’ll have no disturbances. That does sound like a perfect plan Mr Kapoor well then Mrs Kapoor let’s not delay while he escorted her to the car whispering in her ear he said this lion is ready for some intense mating with his lioness, she looked at him pretending to be shocked you are just crazy she laughed, no Mrs Kapoor i'm crazy just for you. In passing people watched and whispered look there’s Ram Kapoor with his wife, she is so lucky they all gushed at the couple driving off in the luxury of a silver grey Jaguar heading to their secret hideout.
