                                                             Chapter Fifty One

Our days are sometimes filled with new beginnings, new joys, new hopes, new dreams, new tomorrow’s and completely different to everything new when our life seems to be peeking at greatness when are our hearts are flowing without limits, when our joys are singing at the sight of happiness it is then that we are faced totally opposite to everything new the ugliness of everything bad, bringing more problems more sadness, more dramas and bad endings to contend with.  It’s difficult to find the strength to move on when our problems seem larger than the beauty of life but then there are reasons for everything we face it’s the law of life where happiness and sadness mix. The way we handle those quantities served out to us is the trick to completing the circuit, it’s simply called a racing track of life when you lose focus its crash, boom, bang out of here but when we keep within the lane we are sure to pass by the victory line whether we first in or last out, the important matter is that we made it through the finishing post without crashing, that is simply called life not realizing its value is where we most times slip up.

This Thursday it was business as usual with a morning start, as the Gulfstream G650 Lear Jet was cruising at a speed of 904km/h leering its way from Kolkata down south across the Deccan Plateau of the Indian state of Karnataka carrying onboard its two frequent travelers of the day for a last minute business meeting. The plush interior of this jet was custom fitted exceeding the price tag of the $65million dollar figure to a whopping $100 million dollars. The owner of this jet had his own specifications included, right now he was here sitting on board this luxury with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice in his hand. You know Vikram I still cannot get this around my head that it was an allergic reaction, have you ever heard something so crazy I mean here I was thinking I was breathing my last breath and all I had was a nasty allergic reaction. I didn’t even realize that I was allergic to anything but the doctor thinks I could be allergic to the oysters from the seafood paella I’d eaten that night.  Shaking his head in disbelief that’s still just got be the most weirdest thing I’ve heard anyway he asked me to stay away from all types of seafood until they sure of the diagnosis from the final results of my blood samples and he will send the report back to me and another to my own doctor.  Vikram said Ram whatever it was I am just bloody glad that you are ok, I mean I literally got the fright of my life when I received the call that you were being admitted into hospital, all I heard was someone saying you were going into a cardiac arrest I went totally blank Ram. Lucky enough the jet was out of its maintenance check and back at the hanger so I could get to Kolkata in time but you know what, I’m still shaking from the shock.  I cannot imagine what would have happened had it been anything serious.  Ram laughed if it had been serious then I would have had to bid saiyonara in Kolkata itself.  Shut the fuck up Ram I would have killed you first myself before I let you die. They stopped for a moment observing their best friend in each other was it the cabin pressure that had them burst out laughing or was it just the culmination of too much stress over the past 6 weeks.  Vikram was trying hard to wipe away his laughing tears or was it tears of relief.  Finally sobering from his laughing fit he said but jokes apart Ram I just thank god you are fine and Ram said thanks bro me too, me to but the somber mood seemed to find its way back home hitting into a reality.  Vikram broke the silence and said are you going to let everyone know what happened because I didn’t say anything. Ram shook his head no Vikram I’m not telling anyone in-fact no one needs to find out. What happened in Kolkata will stay in Kolkata but Ram what about Priya? No way Vikram, are you crazy I’ll never tell Priya anything we have not even spoken to each other for over three weeks so it doesn’t really matter.  Vikram looked at his friend with concern Ram how long are you both going to carry on like this? don’t ask me Vikram ask Priya this question she’s the one that’s treating me like I’m the bad guy in all of this. I’ve kept my distance to give her the space that she needs that’s what her doctor had suggested so I thought about it realistically and realized I’d rather give her the space that she needs to deal with what she’s going through instead of forcing her and pushing her into something she’s not ready to face, but let me tell you Vikram it’s the hardest fucking thing I’ve ever done in my life, I love her so much it just kills me staying away from her.  You know yourself Ram, Neha had a miscarriage with our first child no doubt it was tough but we got through it because we had each other and look now we have three beautiful children, I know the circumstances surrounding Priya is different but I disagree with this distance, you both need each other more than ever to get through this and I know that you’ll tell me I don’t understand what’s going on but Ram I’ve was there and I saw your suffering in this too, I see it every single day we all see it and Priya needs to realize this she can’t keep pushing you away like this, you have to do something about it you can’t let her slip away like this.  There was silence for a few seconds and then Vikram said on second thoughts Ram maybe it’s time I spoke to Priya and make her see some sense.  Ram looked at his friend shaking his head he said no Vikram leave it, leave it alone for now when I get back to Mumbai I’ll figure something out.  Anyway my mother is insistent that I am back home tomorrow night because she’s having some special dinner I’m not sure what it is all about but she made me promise that I’ll be there maybe on Saturday I’ll go see Priya at her parent’s house and hopefully she’ll agree to talk to me again rationally.    The pilot made an announcement from his cockpit Mr Kapoor & Mr Shergill we about 5 minutes to landing please can you fasten your seat belts.  As he clipped on his seat belt Vikram said and Neha will have my head if I’m not home by Friday night, its Riddima’s violin recital and the entire week Neha has been reminding me every moment she can get and god forbid if I miss it then I’ll be camping out at Kapoor Mansion. Ram laughed imaging Neha when she was furious, he laughed some more imagining Vikram thrown out the house you are more than welcome in fact we’ll camp out together in the bar, Vikram said Ram that’s more like it now you talking like a brother hahahahahaha.  Once again the pilot spoke from the cockpit Mr Kapoor we’ve just landed at Bangalore international airport the outside temperature is at 28 degrees with clear skies ahead do enjoy your stay here sir and we will see you back on your return flight to Mumbai.

Di please promise me you will think about it, Ayesha you know I can’t I still have my weekly appointment with my doctor but Di you can at least ask the doctor I mean you need a real holiday and I so want to see you Di I really miss you so much.  I’m sorry that I couldn’t be there for you.  Why are you sorry Ayesha please I know you wanted to be there but couldn’t and I totally understand that.  You know Di this is the hardest part of my work being away from all of you especially when you need me the most, there are times that I wonder is all of this worth the sacrifice not being there for my family I can never forgive myself that I couldn’t be there for papa when he was sick and now for you Di, every time I take on an assignment these clauses are so strict it doesn’t give me any time off.  Priya said stop being so hard on yourself Ayesha please listen to me we all understand your predicament modeling was always your dream and now that you actually living this dream even bigger than what you had imagined it to be, do you think we want you to give it all up just to be here with us, no Ayesha this is your life this is what you wanted and you have to complete what you set out to achieve.  Don’t worry about us mama, papa, karthik and me we’ll always be right here for you so you can come back home at anytime you need too but finish what you’ve started and never forget Ayesha live your dream but make sure you live it with the values that you were brought up with, promise me that Ayesha promise me.  Off course Di I promise you I see all these young naive girls that come out here to make it big just like I did and they get caught up with all the craziness that surrounds the modeling industry the drugs, the eating disorders, the adultery, the boozing it’s just horrible Di and I never want to be compromised like this ever. Each day I thank god that I have a sister like you, you guided me so much while I was growing up I’ll never let you down Di.  Priya smiled proudly with a lump in her throat while she listened to her sister talk. Enough Di enough of this you have to promise that you will come visit me. Priya laughed are you not going to let go of that absolutely not Di especially when I just received some exciting news and you the first person I’m telling this too, my agent just called me to tell me that Vera Wang wanted me in her edition of her bridal spring collection.  Oh wow Ayesha that’s amazing I’m so proud of you I hope you said yes to that.  No not yet Di I really wanted to come home first for a bit, are you crazy silly girl you just say yes right now, how can you miss this opportunity? but Di no but Ayesha you listen to me how long  have you dreamed of being a model and you’ve worked really hard to get where you are so don’t you dare say no to this offer you can come home anytime after that.  Ayesha said you know Di you are really bossy, Priya laughed that’s because I’m bigger than you so you have to listen to what I tell you. Ayesha laughed I love you Di I love you so much, I love you to Ayesha remember that always.  Ok then Di it’s decided I’ll say yes to Vera Wang and you will have to come visit me when i'm in Italy. We’ll go on our holiday together visiting all these quaint little villages down on the Amalfi coast you’ll love it Di, it’s such a different world out here and the best thing is nobody will really care who you are say yes please Di, pretty please I promise I’ll make it the best holiday ever for you.  Priya laughed Ayesha please stop tempting me, Di I’m going to hound you till you say yes.  Priyaaaa yes papa I’m coming Ayesha I’ve got to go now papa is calling me I’ll speak to you later. Ok but promise you’ll think about what I said, I promise ok, I promise now go away you crazy silly girl she laughed her off as she cut the call to go see what her papa wanted, and so the day continued patiently for the next day.

And a beautiful Friday it was the walls of Kapoor Mansion came out alive singing merrily to each other as they passed through the day, truth be told these last few weeks were depressing however hard they tried to cheer up it didn’t feel right but once again their happy times were here bring on the cheering squad they shouted we want a party in-fact we demand a party hahahahahahaha these crazy walls here they go again.  Ram walked into the house having been absent for four days he came to a dead stop, the house was quiet but he felt something, something was different but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Everything seemed alive again like he’d known it to be, just imagining her bewitching eyes her kissable lips. His love what was she doing? Did she ever stop to think about him maybe he should forget everything and just go see her right now.  His mother was alerted to his arrival welcoming him back home, Ram beta you finally home she smiled I missed you my son where were you for so long. I'm sorry ma I had to fly from Kolkata to Bangalore there was an urgent meeting that I had to attend.  Ok she said I hope everything is sorted out now, yes ma it’s all ok, good she said now that you home you go have a shower and get ready, our visitors will be here in about an hour.  Ma but, no but Ram just go and trust your mother. He had no choice but to say ok turning to leave he walked up the stairs to his room in a slow lethargic way a defeated presence seemed to burden him.  Krishna looked at his re-treating back with a heavy heart, he seemed to carry the whole world on his shoulders but not anymore my son she thought to herself. Your sadness won’t be there much longer I’m bringing your happiness back to you I’m brining your Priya back. She turned to go back to the kitchen taking the end of sari she dabbed at the corner of her eye. 

The drive to Kapoor Mansion had Priya feeling tense she was minutes away from facing her biggest fear and it was her main reason for not returning back to Kapoor Mansion the day she was discharged from hospital.  She didn’t have the courage to face Dadi knowing how much she had wanted a great grandchild, she lost the heir of the Kapoor family, she felt guilty for her stubborn ways maybe if she just listened to Ram she would not have been in that situation that’s why she tried to distract herself from her guilt by turning her anger on Ram she wanted him to feel pain she wanted him to suffer, really suffer. I guess its true you hurt the person you love the most I wonder is that suppose to be another law of life? She wanted to hurt him yet she wanted him to hold her like he used too and never let go of her. Why couldn't he see what she really needed instead he kept his distance, was she not worth his effort anymore maybe those gossiping ladies were right. She touched her hand on the cold glass window looking out into the night with the traffic passing by people on the streets going home , going out for the night or going no where.  Early this morning something happened which she tried to ignore.  She had gone out for her early morning walk with her papa it was the only time in the day she got out the house or unless she went for her doctor’s appointment with either Natasha or Neha accompanied by bodyguards, most times she was inside the house not wanting to go anywhere.  This morning she was returning back from her walk, her papa was at a distance away when she over head a conversation between two ladies that she knew by passing sight.  You know Radha I think he’ll divorce her I mean he’s so rich off course he needs an heir why would he settle for a middle class girl who cannot give him children. Don’t say that Sheila look how the poor thing lost her baby she’s is such a sweet girl. Radha listen to me I’m telling you what’s going to happen there’s no way Ram Kapoor will stay married to her for long, he needs children and her age is passing her by but I think she can’t have children again that’s why she is staying here with her parents in-fact maybe they already separated, you know my friend's sister has a son who friend's uncle works at Kapoor Industries anyway she told me that her son said Mr Kapoor could be having an affair. No Sheila you must be mistaken, I’m telling you Radha these rich men you can’t trust them they can easily discard their woman just like that and take another just as quickly.   Priya listened to bits of this sickening conversation unable to hear anymore, how cruel can people be discussing her personal life which they knew nothing off. She walked away with a piercing heart looking at her father signaling for her. Both Radha and Sheila the gossiping duo from the building were never aware that their conversation was overheard. Priya almost didn’t want to come tonight how could she face everyone, Ma, Dadi, Rishabh, Apeksha and most importantly how would she face Ram after their fight but her papa had made her promise so she couldn’t refuse but thank god they were only going to Kapoor Mansion for dinner after that she will go back home to her parents house where she felt comfortable and at ease.

While Priya was still deep in thought, Ram was casually walking down the stairs of Kapoor Mansion wearing a tailored fitted charcoal grey pants with a white Armani long sleeved shirt open at the neck and neatly tucked into his pants.  His short hair was washed slightly wet in a sleek style that suited his handsome face.  Whatever he wore he just looked like a million bucks well I suppose he was a billion dollar man but something dearly was a miss and that was the love of his life, it was hard seeing them apart because they were always together.  Dadi was sitting on the chair observing her grandson he smiled at her going forward he touched her feet to take her blessings, bless you my son she said with love and affection.  Apeksha and Rishabh both came at the same time to welcome him home, he took both of them on either side of his arms hugging them both. Speaking to Rishabh he said I’m surprised to see you at home this early . Awwwhhh bhai come on when I go out you complain, when I stay home you still complain what must I do then?  Ram laughed squeezing his baby brother around his neck that’s because you rascal I never know what you up too in-fact I think i’m going to drag you into the office because its high time you learnt some responsibility awhhhh bhai that’s not fair Rishabh complained. You right bhai Apeksha laughed let him go work in the office while he's still on his college break otherwise he'll just laze around here or go roaming about like he normally does. You brat I’m going to get you for that Rishabh said threatening his older sister, will you both stop it Ram said to them.  Krishna came into the room going to Ram she touched his left arm scolding her two younger children will you both stop troubling your brother and you Rishabh your brother is right its time you learnt some responsibility.  Dadi said Krishna leave my boy alone Rishabh turned to his rock star Dadi and said see Dadi how mean they are to me wait till my bhabhi comes home then we’ll see what's going to happen. Apeksha laughed Rishabh you are spoilt brat face it you need to grow up.   

Ram shook his head at the two of them and said to his mother, by the way ma you didn’t tell me who’s coming to dinner? Krishna looked at her son smiling at him she said someone very special is coming, but who ma?  she didn’t have the chance to respond because there was the sound of the familiar voice of Sudhir Sharma, may we come in he asked smiling at them? they all turned to look at the entrance Ram was surprised to see his in-laws here, his mother said well I guess our guests have arrived leaving him looking stunned while she went forward to greet them.  Bhai Nutz said happily, choti he said hugging her but Ram was looking at the entrance if they were all here where was his Priya?  Ram was just about to ask this question when like a vision Priya appeared at the entrance. There was a surprised gasp she looked beautiful wearing a sari in a shade of light pink, her hair was left open with soft curls over her shoulder, her makeup was light and subtle just her kohled eyes and a touch of lip gloss on her delectable lips. She was an angel, she was his angel he hadn’t seen her in over three weeks it felt like a lifetime.  He didn’t move from his spot standing there watching her with piercing intensity.  Krishna went to welcome the treasure of their home with a huge smile, Priya touched her feet to take her blessings, bless you my child, bless you.  She helped Priya up holding her between the palm of her hand wet tears touching her eyelashes as she looked at this angelic face. Krishna hugged her Priya felt the touch of a mother’s love and it made her feel special, I missed you so much we all missed you.

Ma please enough Rishabh said lightly pushing his mother away you had your turn now its mine, they all laughed at his playful eagerness he stood in front of Priya with the biggest smile grinning from ear to ear then he gave his serious face with his eyes lowered to the floor like a lost little puppy Priya bhabhi I have a complaint,  Priya with a slight smile on her face what’s your complaint Rishabh? well they all are being mean to me telling me nasty things. Apeksha  swatted him on his head you shameless boy what’s wrong with you, ouch that hurts, you see bhabhi do you see what I mean. Priya laughed and said come here Rishabh and he went into her warm hug I missed you bhabhi so much.  Not leaving him alone Apeksha gripped his shirt from the back pulling him away get lost you she said then sweetly smiled at Priya welcome bhabhi and she hugged her tightly.  Krishna said will you both let Priya at least come inside the house first, Apeksha Laughed off course she can letting Priya step inside.

She was afraid to look at him, his eyes burning into her everything seemed to disappear around them was it just him and her. They stood amongst their families not able to move thud, thud, thud the beat of the lovers heart's moved in sync. His thoughts sending out a message to her come to me my baby I’m waiting urging her forward, was there a begging plea come on my sweetheart don’t keep me waiting any longer.  Did she hear him moving her feet forward slowly walking to a heat that was drawing her closer.  Priyaaaaaa, Priyaaaaaa my child an elderly voice called out to her distracting the lover’s thoughts.  Priya turned her head to look at Dadi sitting on the chair waiting to receive her, seeing the older woman broke Priya’s heart inside into a million pieces remembering her reason to stay away from them but right here right now nothing mattered but going to Dadi, the big hearted old lady that she loved very much.  She sidestepped in her track changing her direction going to Dadi to take her blessings sitting down next to her she held Dadi's hand while she sobbed with how much she missed Priya.  Standing watching their daughter reunite with her family made Sudhir and Shipra proud. This family loved her so much not only could it be seen, it could be felt all around.

Ram couldn’t take his eyes of her she was here finally home where she belonged always. I just want to hold you baby I want to hold you and never let you go again when can I have you alone to myself. Priya was kept busy nobody thought about the biggest reunion that needed to take place nobody thought to give Ram and Priya a moment to meet they hadn't even greeted each other yet thud, thud, thud their hearts were beating.  The laughing and non- stop chatting was going on while Dadi kept Priya all to herself enquiring about her health and she wanted to know if she was eating on time, was she taking her medication.  One of the servants came to announce that dinner was served one by one they woke up to go to the dining room. Priya helped Dadi up holding her hand firmly as she slowly walked her to the table to take a seat the others were already seated by then, the seating arrangement was strategically planned that conveniently left an empty seat next to Ram.  Krishna said Priya come my child sit down, Ram watched her move across the table thud, thud, thud she carefully sat down next to him trying not to look to his side.  Hi he greeted her softly she blushed in her shyness hi she said back not daring to look his aftershave was intoxicating creating a crazy havoc with her senses Ram always smelt good and that drove her crazy for him.  There was silence between them as the food was being passed around the table normally Priya would have served him but this time she didn’t move keeping her head lowered to her empty plate.

 Krishna said Priya can you please serve this to Ram she passed a casserole dish with baked fish in it, Priya had no choice in the matter taking the casserole dish she turned to serve him the fish. Flash backs took over from the night he stayed over at her parent’s house with her, when in the middle of night she sat on his lap feeding him and loving him so.  Did he remember too, he cleared his throat and quickly placed his hand over his plate, no thank you he said.  She looked at him hurt was he refusing to eat the fish because she was serving it to him.  What’s wrong beta Krishna asked, no ma nothing I’ve already eaten fish for lunch, oh ok she said. Priya muttered under her breath funny you don’t say the same when it comes to eating aloo paratha, Ram heard it and smiled Priya blushed knowing he heard her and she pretended to not care.  What she didn’t know Ram was not allowed to eat any sea food until they found the root cause to his allergy, he helped himself to what was laid out in front of him while Priya helped herself to the vegetarian dishes. Taking their own time they ate their dinner silently with thudding hearts somewhere between them a fork was knocked off the table. At exactly the same time they both bent to pick it up almost knocking their heads together, sorry Priya said trying to straighten up but his hand brushed hers underneath the table a shocking voltage of body current passed through he held her hand and she didn't pull away letting their fingers slide together fitting secure into the grooves as they pressed down into a firm grip.  They took gasped breaths it felt like the moment when he would enter her but all they were doing was joining hands.  It was hard to breathe sitting here next to each other needing to get closer but pretending to eat while underneath the table this heated joining of their hands was building in a lovers tension.  Bhabhi please pass me the salad Rishab said, for that she needed to free her hand but Ram was not ready to let go, don’t worry I’ll pass it he said offering it to Rishab, thanks bhai.  Their fingers continued to move rubbing skin to skin, baby I want you alone just you and me I want to hold you like I’ve never held you before. I missed you Ram where did you go too why did you stay away from me for so long, the intensity of the grip tightened as their mind connected with their thoughts, she squeezed her legs tightly together the heat unbearable creating her own wetness around her.  Not able to stand it any longer she said please excuse me I need to use the bathroom she tried to get up but he jerked her hand she turned to look into his eyes  pleading with him to let her go.  Anything wrong Priya, Shipra asked? She turned to her mother no ma I’m ok my sari got stuck underneath my chair she lied, oh ok then Shipra said. Ram let go of her hand reluctantly his eyes speaking to her telling her I’m not leaving you alone.  She cleared her throat as she got up from the table walking to the guest bathroom to the other side of the house furthest from everyone. She wanted some distance needing a moment alone to recover. Two minutes later unable to bear the separation he said excuse me I forgot I have to make an urgent international call.  There were nods and smiles around the table they all seemed to think something was going on, Krishna was smiling within herself was it what she'd hoped for.

Ram followed the trail of her perfume that lingered in the air until he came to the door that he knew she would be inside.  He turned the door handle opening it, she was at the wash basin dabbing her face when she heard the door open.  He closed the door turning the key locking them in from the outside world. Nothing else was more important than being here, she turned around to face him their eyes clashed the desire burning between them setting this bathroom on a high alert.  Nothing was happening but silence just the knocking of the lovers heartbeat thud, thud, thud in a moment with no thought or care she was flying into his arms. He picked her up holding her to him, baby they both said to each other in a sob at the same time, she held him tight gripping his neck as he hid his face into the side of her neck kissing her skin. He held her tight around her waist lifting her so that their bodies could be close walking her back against the wall not letting her go he held her face in between the palm of his hands to absorb her right here. It was almost unbelievable she was here swooping down on her delicious mouth, rough bruising kisses was the order from these lovers who were apart for too long. The intensity of the meeting was wild with too much emotion at play her hands were running into his short hair, while his hands were running down her slightly bare back. He lowered his hands until he was gripping her buttocks pressing her into him no words were spoken just their tongues doing it’s own twisting and turning nothing else was needed just this moment that gripped them so intensely deep............ fly, fly, fly me to the moon........................ was it just a dream?
